Why was it called the Manhattan Project? The Manhattan Project was the title of the development of the first nuclear weapons during World War II. It started with the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, whose center of operations was in New York City Hall in Manhattan. It's original name was to be the “Laboratory for the Development of Substitute Materials,” however it was changed to avoid attention. The project was under the management of General Leslie R. Groves, while the scientific research was controlled by American physicist, J. Robert Oppenheimer. It began after Einstein wrote a warning letter to US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, explaining that the Nazi's might be building Nuclear Weapons. In the end, the Manhattan Project had utilized more than 130,000 people and spent almost $2 billion dollars. It contributed of about 10 sites, in locations which contained laboratories for splitting the atom or warehouses holding uranium.
